Ruby (Brown) Thomas

October 8, 1915 — February 11, 2013

Louisville - Mrs. Ruby Thomas, age 97, died Monday, February 11, 2013 in Gwinnett Extended Care Center, Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, February 17, 2013 in the Louisville United Methodist Church, with burial following in the Louisville City Cemetery with Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Mrs. Thomas moved to Louisville, GA after graduating from Bartow High School and married Oliver Thomas. She had a short experience at Miller's 5 to $1.00 variety store before training to be a Beautician under the watchful eye of Marguerite Clark, who later married Milton Steed.
Ruby earned her Beautician License and continued working with Margareta. In 1942 Margareta sold her business to Ruby so she could join her husband who was stationed in California during WWII. The business name was changed to Deluxe Beauty Shop and although raising three children, Ruby operated her business 55 years. Her home was also a haven for her grandchildren.
She was active in the community with Girl and Boy Scouts; for 55 years faithfully assumed responsibility in many capacities for Louisville United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a worker and a leader and worked with the youth, taught Sunday school, worked in the kitchen, served on the Administrative Council, organized 5 prayer chains and served United Methodist Women on the Local, District and Conference levels as President. It wasn't the reward that mattered or the recognition she might harvest. It was her depth of commitment, her quality of service, and the product of her devotion; these were the things that counted in her life. The honor came in giving, and that was honor enough. On August 26, 2010 Ruby moved to Lawrenceville, GA to receive eldercare at Gwinnett Extended Care Center and to be closer to her family.
Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Thomas; four sisters Margarite Brown, Evelyn Brown, Lucille Thomas, and Grace Livesay; two brothers William (Bill) J. Brown, and Platte River (Buddy) Brown Jr. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Shirley and Cal Bolling (Peachtree City, GA), Ruby and David Sipper (Port Charlotte, FL), her son and daughter-in-law James O. and Judy Thomas (Snellville, GA); two sisters Agnes B. Sykes (Strafford, VA), and Betty Sue Goodwin (Louisville, GA); grandchildren James S. Bolling (Philadelphia, PA), James O. Thomas III (Middleburg, FL) Calvin L. Bolling (Birmingham, AL) Michael D. Thomas (Plymouth, WI), Melvin F. Bolling (Monroe, UT), Christiana S. Green (Atlanta, GA), Samuel F. Thomas (College Park, GA), and Julie T. Guárnizo (Atlanta, GA). Also, surviving are 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
