Mayme Lee Wasden Quin, 96, of Louisville passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, in Girard, Georgia, where she had been a resident for the past six years.
Graveside services will be held for Mrs. Quin on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Louisville City Cemetery with Mr. Bill Smith of First Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service at Taylor Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Frank Ethridge, William Hadden, John Murphy, Larry Morgan, William Rabun and Mike Hartley.
Mrs. Quin was married to Jerrold Joseph Quin. Jerry, who passed away in 1965, was the Band Director at Louisville Academy. They had no children.
Mayme Lee was born March 21, 1916, in Louisville, Georgia to parents Philip E. Wasden and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Scarber Wasden. The Wasden family operated "Wasden Variety Store" for many years. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers, Walter Wasden, Hubert Wasden, and Lewis Wasden, and two sisters Velver Wasden Joiner and Ada Lee Wasden Pope, and several nieces and nephews.
After graduating from Louisville Academy she attended Bessie Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia and Erskine College in Due West, SC. She earned a Masters Degree in Foreign Language at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and her Six Year Certificate from the University of Georgia. During World War II she spent time in Washington, DC and San Francisco working as a cryptographer for the federal government. During the war secret information was transmitted in secret codes. Cryptographers who could translate encoded German and Japanese military and diplomatic communications were vitally important for allied victory in World War II.
After returning home she embarked on a long teaching career. Mrs. Quin touched the lives of many of Louisville's young people through her French and Latin classes at Louisville Academy and later at Jefferson County High School. She retired from teaching in 1990.
Mrs. Quin was a member of First Baptist church in Louisville and the Louisville Homemakers Club. She was an avid reader, a wonderful conversationalist, and a world traveler. Always an adventurer she enjoyed life to its fullest and enhanced the lives of her nieces and nephews who always loved her company.
To cherish her memory always are her surviving nieces and nephews, Brenda Wasden Wilkes, Don Wasden, Jean Pope Davidson, Harry Pope, Jackie Joiner Dixon, Wayne Joiner, and Dot Joiner Fischer.
