Wadley

Taylor Funeral Home of Louisville announces the death of Mrs. Elizabeth N. Weeks, 95, of Oak Street Wadley who died Thursday afternoon August 20, 2020 at her residence.

Graveside Services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday August 23, 2020 in the Wadley Cemetery with Rev. Gene McCoy, and Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Visitation will be following the service at Wadley City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ben Kay, Robbie Brett, Tony Brett, Adam Brett, Nick Farrer & Ronnie Ballenger. Because of the family's concern for public health and safety during this pandemic, the family requests that social distancing, masks are required, and other safety precautions be followed.

Elizabeth was a late-in-life child with three older sisters who spoiled her a lot.  She recalled times in the dairy barn helping her Mother with the milking and riding with her Mother to deliver the milk to homes in Louisville.  She talked about picking cotton although her tales of long hours and bounteous picking never matched to her sister's accounts.

She met her future husband on a blind date, married him in July before Pearl Harbor in December 1941.  They were blessed with a daughter the next year as Gerald joined the Navy and she followed him to his various stations, from Louisiana, Texas, Virginia to Rhode Island.  It is amazing to us Mother, this young, small-town girl , would travel by train, bus or whatever with one little girl and one baby in her arms to be wherever Daddy was.

After the war they made their home in Augusta for approximately ten years moving to Thomson to operate a grocery store and a chicken processing plant.  In 1960, they returned to Wadley and eventually opened the Clover Farm grocery store where they worked together for the next twenty plus years.  They were able to build a cabin at Clarks Hill and spent many Thursday afternoons and weekends cleaning the lot and enjoying the water (they weren't very good at fishing).  Their favorite time was when all the children and grandchildren spent time with them at the lake.

After Daddy passed away, she remained fiercely independent devoting time to Sunday School teaching, home-bound visitation, Women's Missionary work, church choir, her children and grandchildren.  An unfortunate incident robbed her briefly of her sense of wellbeing; her desire for independence soon returned and lasted until her last days.  We are so proud of her, her strength to overcome.

Mother was a Christian mother always instructing us children in the manner God wants us to live.  She took seriously the words of Titus 2:3-5:  The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; that they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Mrs. Weeks is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 54 years, Robert G. Weeks, sisters, Leona Newsome McGraw, Pearlie Maude Newsome Bragg, Blanche Newsome Grundy, and is survived by, daughters, Elizabeth Weeks Sheppard (Charles) of Avera, Betty Ann Weeks Brett (Bobby) of Wadley, Margaret "Peggy" Weeks (Charles Rhodes) of Grovetown, Kathy Weeks Farrer (Quinton) son, Robert "Bobby" G. Weeks Jr. (Pauline) of Bartow.

We found this Irish Blessing in her Bible, "May God grant you always . . . A sunbeam to warm you; A moonbeam to charm you; A sheltering angel so nothing can harm you; Laughter to cheer you, Faithful friends near you; And whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you!"

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wadley Baptist Church or to the Choideremina Research Foundation.

Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Care of Louisville will be in charge of arrangements.
