Kay F. Heilig

August 9, 1936 — February 3, 2026

Wadley

Kay Fleetwood Heilig of Wadley, Georgia, 89, passed away in the early hours of February 3, 2026. A gifted storyteller, he was a man of world travel, bold adventures, and deep love for his family. He was as quick with a joke as he was to invite you to sit for a chat.

Born August 9th, 1936, in Charlotte, NC. He spent his childhood in Cherry Point, NC and had fond memories of frequenting the Salter Path with his older brother Jennings. After a semester at college, Kay enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served from Germany to Japan and many places in the US. Kay earned both his Bachelors and master’s while serving; he flew as an Airborne Russian Linguist during Vietnam. He retired from the USAF after 20 years of honorable service. After his time in the military, he had a second career in international relations. These positions took him abroad to many spectacular and at times hazardous places. For the rest of his life, he relished retelling these dramatic experiences.

Kay married the love of his life, Susan (nee Usry), after Christmas 1977. Together they adored gathering with friends and family, hosting dinners, playing bridge, and doting on their grandchildren. They were especially delighted in their travel, journeying from Moscow to the Galapagos, and countless places along the way. They reveled in the memories of experiencing the world together.

Kay was preceded in death by his parents Betty Wallace Heilig Springs and Gus Heilig, older brother Jennings Heilig, and beloved sister-in-law Nancy Heilig. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan Heilig. His daughter, Kathy Grava (Andra). Sister-in-love Tina Sloan (Donnie). His niece Deb Heilig (Loretta) and his nephew Jennings “Butch” Heilig. His grandchildren Krista Madden (Timothy), James Sloan (Molly), Karl Grava (Michaele). His great-grandchildren Timothy “Trey” Madden, Thomas Madden, Theodore Madden, Robin Sloan, and Ivy Sloan. And his most cherished friend and companion Margaret Strowbridge.

As per Kay’s explicit wishes, there will be no formal services held. Personal visits are encouraged and welcome at the home of Susan Heilig.

Taylor Funeral Home and Cremation Care of Louisville is in charge of arrangements.
