John Steven Gearig was born to Lloyd C. and (Dottie) Bertha Schneider Gearig on February 25, 1943, in Wauseon, Ohio.  On December 4, 2023, at the age of eighty years old he quietly passed away due to complications from a stroke at the MCG Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Dianne Tanner Gearig was born to Roger Lewis Tanner, Jr., and Annie Velma Smith Tanner on March 11, 1947, in Augusta, Georgia.  She passed away, due to heart failure, a few hours after her husband, the love of her life, on December 4, 2023, at the MCG hospital in Augusta, GA.

John, as a young lad and throughout his life, was affectionately called Johnny by those of us who knew and loved him.  He was the fifth child of five boys and four girls.  In 1954, at the age of eleven, he moved with his family to a farmstead near Louisville, Georgia, and served four years in the United States Navy.  Returning home, he began working with the Jefferson County Electric Cooperative.  Later, he was employed with the Southern Bell telephone company which spanned many years until his retirement.  Johnny was known for the twinkle in his eyes.  We loved his quiet wit and gentle teasing.  We admired his steadfast courage in facing life's difficulties.  Johnny greatly enjoyed going to Ogeechee Valley Country Club playing golf and being with his friends and also helping in the maintenance work.

Dianne was the first child of two having only one sister.  She grew up in Augusta, Georgia area and graduated from Butler High School.  On July 2, 1965, Johnny and Dianne were joined in marriage.  They happily shared life together for over fifty-eight years.  Their home was blessed with one son, Troy Steven.  In the earlier years of their marriage Dianne worked as an administrative assistant to the plant manager of Thermo King in their hometown of Louisville.  Dianne endured many health issues in her life.  The loving and dedicated care that Johnny gave Dianne, in her extremity, was co compassionate and caring.  Dianne was a perceptive person taking life seriously and was known by her grandchildren as being firm but fair and very protective of them.

We, as a family commit them into God's all-knowing and loving care.

Those left to share precious memories are their son, Troy Gearig of Stapleton, one grandson, Mason Gearig of Stapleton, two granddaughters Kalissa and husband Chaning Housley of Maryville TN., and Kendall and husband Dakota Lamb of Wadley, and their mother Caryl, two brothers Crist Gearig and Joyce of Brooksville, MS, and Lloyd Jr. and Kathleen Gearig of Louisville, four sisters Ellyn Peters of Ithaca, Michigan, Bonnie Hiebert of Louisville, GA, Sandra and Jim Smith of Butte City , CA Faith and Ken Diller of Gallion, AL, one sister in law Thelma Gearig of Sedalia, KY, one brother in law Van Hiebert of Louisville and many relatives and friends.

Preceding them in death are their parents, one sister, two brothers, and one brother-in-law.

The Gearig family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday evening, December 7, at the funeral home.
