J. Farris Sheppard Obituary

Taylor Funeral home of Louisville announces the death and services of Mr. J. Farris (Tag) Sheppard, age 98, of Forest Street, Louisville, who died peacefully Saturday, February 10, 2018 at his residence.

Memorial Services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, February 15, 2018 in the Louisville United Methodist Church with Dr. Peter Vermeulen and Rev David Boggs officiating.

Mr. Sheppard was a native of Stapleton, GA. He was the last surviving of 7 children born to the late Joseph Jefferson Sheppard and Fannie Walden Sheppard.  Mr. Sheppard served 11 years in the US Navy, was a World War II veteran, and was a surviving crewmember of the aircraft carrier USS Franklin kamikaze attack.  He was a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church where he served in various leadership capacities, a teacher and member of the Barwick Sunday School Class and Red Tie Club.   He was a founding member of the Louisville Lions Club; a member in good standing of the Stonewall Masonic Lodge; and a retired rural mail carrier.

Mr. Sheppard was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Cleon, Harold, and Lamar Sheppard; and three sisters, Marie Williams, Helen Thomas, and Judy Tanner.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Lois Polhill Sheppard; his son, Joseph Sheppard, Jr; daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Bissell Vann; grandson and his wife, Eric and Samantha Sheppard and two great-grandchildren; step-sister and husband, Diane and Gary Rhodes; and extended family members, Sabrina Dawson and Mary Heath.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Red Tie Club and Barwick-Gay Sunday School Class.

Family will receive friends at the church following the service.
